JaNoel Lott Bess, 49, of Hardy, died Sept. 13 at NEA Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.

Born in Blytheville, she was a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and worked as a speech therapist in the Little Rock area from 1979-1981.

She served as a director of public education programs for Arkansas Children's Hospital Child Enrichment Center in Little Rock from 1986-1988.

She served as a director of institutional relations/lifelong education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock from 1988-1991; director of institutional relations/lifelong education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock from 1988-1991; director of public education for the American Cancer Society, New Jersey Division in South Brunswick, N.J., from 1993-1994. She was director of "New Jersey Breathes," implementing a "SmokeLess States" grant project for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation from 1994-1996; director of membership for the Medical Society of New Jersey in Lawrenceville, N.J., from 1996-1999; and operated Bessx Management Consulting Services in New Jersey and then in Arkansas from 1999-2005.

She was co-author of the Arkansas Workbook used as a supplemental history textbook published in 1993, and was the founder of the "Fly High with Reading" kite festival in Hardy benefiting the Sharp County Literacy Council.

She had resided in Hardy since 2001, where she had served as innkeeper at the Olde Stonehouse Bed and Breakfast Inn in Hardy, which she owned and operated with her husband.

She was a member of the Hardy United Methodist Church, where she served as education director, and was a member of the Timely Club in Hardy and a volunteer for the Sharp County Literacy Council.

She is survived by her husband, Greg Bess of the home; two daughters, Rebecca Bess of Washington D.C., and Leah Bess of Hardy; a son-in-law, Anthony Sutton of Washington, D.C.; her parents, Mildred and Solan Lott Sr. of Jonesboro; her brother and sister-in-law, Solan Lott Jr. and his wife, Leslie of Jonesboro; her sister and brother-in-law, Audrey and Steve Watkins of Jonesboro; a brother-in-law and his wife, Jeff and Stefani Bess of Longview, Texas; her father-in-law, Willard Bess of Blytheville; and her nieces and nephews, Austin Lott and Adam, Emma and Sophie Watkins, all of Jonesboro and Jordan Bess and Shayne Wright of Longview, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Ruth Bess.

A memorial service was held on Sept. 16 at Cherokee Village United Methodist Church.

The funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Tri-County Funeral Home of Hardy, Ark.
