Four periods of action were not enough to deicide whether it would be Calico Rock or Viola that would make it into the semi-final round of the girls' division in the Lyon College Invitational Tournament.
In the end, the Lady Pirates were the ones who advanced, topping the Lady Longhorns 54-48 in overtime Dec. 5 at Becknell Gymnasium in Batesville. With the game knotted at 44-all after regulation, Calico Rock outscored Viola 10-4 in the extra frame to survive in the tourney.
Kim Sutterfield paced the Lady Pirates with 22, while Jessica Sanders had 11 and Hannah Wright 10. Miranda Jones logged six, Emily Jenkins three and Jennifer Tunnicliff two for the Lady Pirates.
Taylor Griggs tossed in 11 to lead Viola, with Leslie Barker adding nine, Chasidy Hutson eight and Mikita Thompson six. Elisabeth Collins and Dedra Johnston finished with five points each, while Kristen Montgomery tallied four.
The Lady Longhorns opened play in the tournament with a 45-34 win over Mount Pleasant Dec. 3. Hutson logged a game-high 21 for Viola, while Griggs had eight and Collins seven.
Thompson tallied four points apiece, with Johnston finishing with one.
Erica Biard led Mount Pleasant with 14, while Sara Adams had 10, Jessica Daigle six and Melissa Martin had four.
It also took an extra frame of play to knock the Longhorns out of the tournament earlier in the week.
The Longhorns held a 32-23 lead after three periods of play against Concord Dec. 3 in opening-round action, but the Pirates rallied late to win the game 61-53 in double overtime.
Rains scored 14 for Viola, while Jesse Shrable added 13, Austin Springfield 12 and Marlin Coggins 11. Humphries finished with three points for the Longhorns.
Viola split a pair of 1A-2 North games with Twin Rivers Dec. 4 at Ravenden Springs, with the Horns winning 36-25 and the Lady Longhorns falling 43-40.
Lucas Rains paced the Longhorns (8-6, 2-0) with 16 points, while Kasey Humphries added 10.
For the Lady Longhorns (9-5, 1-1),Hutson poured in 25 points in the three-point loss.
