D.C. "Doc" Hensley, 85, of Carlsbad, N.M., died Feb. 22, 2006, at Covenant Medical Center.

A memorial service was held Feb. 25 at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home Chapel with Anthony Bryant of Fox and Lake Church of Christ officiating.

Hensley was born Aug. 29, 1920, in Bexar, Ark., the son of John and Anne Harris Hensley. He moved with his family to New Mexico due to his mother's health, moving back to Arkansas after her death. He moved back to New Mexico after high school and went to work in Clovis for the Santa Fe Railroad.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in Europe. After his tour of service, he went back to work for the railroad.

He married Elzada Marie Benson in 1950 in Muleshoe, Texas. Elzada died in 1963 and Doc retired in 1981. He marired Verna Z. Thompson on April 24, 1983, in Artesia.

His hobbies included gardening, hunting, visiting with friends over coffee at Denny's and collecting "dated nails" from railroad construction. He belonged to several organizations: the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employ-ees, a rail workers union of which he was president for 17 years; The Knight of Pythias, past grand chancellor; AARP; and was a lifelong member of the VFW. He was a member of Fox and Lake Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Verna Hensley of the home; a son, David Hensley of Carlsbad, and his son, Gregory of Palisade, Colo.; daughter, Susan Hensley of Aurora, Colo.; a son, Charles Markwell and wife, Bonnie of Kalamazoo, Mich., and their children, Chris and Travis; a son, Randy Gibbs and wife, Linda of Huntsville, Ala.; Verna's three sons and four daughters; a brother, Bill Hensley and wife, Ninafaye of Fort Worth, Texas; a halfsister, Janet Sandusky and husband Jerry of Dexter, Mo.; stepbrother, Beverly J. Wray and wife Cynthia of Indianapolis, and Erman Wray and wife Ruby of Calico Rock, Ark.; and sisters-in-law, Novelene Way of Salem, Joyce Hensley of Bexar, and Sue Deatherage of Viola.

Doc was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Elsada Marie Benson Hensley; two sisters, Virginia Merrell and Evalee Payne; two halfbrothers, Carl Hensley and Fred Hensley; and stepbrother Brad Wray.
