Spring Dipper robbed, blood found at scene

Tuesday, July 3, 2007

MAMMOTH SPRING -- A Thayer man, Robert Winegardner has been charged with commercial burglary, a class C felony and criminal mischief in the first degree.

Mammoth Spring Police Chief Michael Davis said The Spring Dipper, an ice cream store located just south of Mammoth Spring on Highway 63, was broke into the night of June 25.

Davis said business owner Neil McWilliams found the glass front door to the building kicked-in when he went to open the store June 26. Davis said a large amount of blood was found in the business and apparently the thief cut himself when he broke the glass door.

Davis said only some rolls of change were taken from the business.

Davis and Thayer Police Chief Frank Bernard went to the Winegardner residence in Thayer and found enough evidence, including a cut on Winegardner and blood in his vehicle, to file charges against him.

Winegardner, 25, was charged and taken to the Fulton County Jail at Salem. He posted a $20,000 bond June 28 and is scheduled to be in Fulton County Court July 17.
