Devon Melbourne, a 2007 graduate of Highland High School, recently attended the Arkansas State Trap Shoot at Lonoke.
Melbourne was going for his sixth state title in trap shooting and was competing in his last year as a junior shooter.
Melbourne has been shooting amateur trap in competition since 2002 and has been a fierce competitor, holding the state Sub-Junior title for the past four years in Arkansas and has also won out-of-state titles in Texas and Mississippi. This year Melbourne has been selected for the Amateur Trap Shooting National Team, along with the Arkansas State Team for 2007.
Melbourne came out with a 98 in his singles' preliminary events and never looked back through the Handicap and Doubles events, racking up the highest scores in all preliminary events.
The weather was 96 degrees when Melbourne came to shoot on championship day, and he shot 100 straight in Singles and took the High Overall with 400 targets and High All-Around with 800 targets, allowing Melbourne to come home with another Junior State title.
Melbourne has been invited to try out for the Junior Olympic Team representing the USA, and has now started intense training for his trip to San Antonio, Texas, and Colorado this July, and also, for the Nationals in Sparta, Ill., in August to represent Arkansas in the National events.
