THAYER -- A Thayer man, Anthony R. Potter, was arraigned in Oregon County Associate Circuit Court July 25 before 37th District Circuit Judge Jo Beth Prewitt.

Potter, 37, has been charged by Oregon County Prosecuting Attorney Fred O'Neill with three counts of felony statutory sodomy in the first degree and one count of felony child molestation in the first degree.

A probable cause statement from the prosecutor's office said on July 18, officers with the Thayer Police Department were contacted by officials with the Department of Family Services (DFS) to check out a hotline call they had received. The call to the DFS indicated that a young girl, under the age of 14, had been sexually abused.

Thayer officers went to the girl's residence in Thayer to interview the girl about the suspected abuse. The girl told officers Potter had made sexual advances to her and that it had happened once or twice a month

Potter and his wife went to the Thayer Police Station where they were interviewed.

Potter's wife said an earlier incident had happened with another young girl. She said Potter had been abused by his father and that counseling was needed.

Potter denied he had abused the child.

Potter returned to the Thayer Police Station July 19 where he was placed under arrest.

A return call was made to the police department from the other girl Potter about the abuse. She told the officer she did not want to talk about it and that she wanted to forget about it. The officer told her Potter said the sexual abuse started when she was 17 or 18. The girl said it was before that but was unwilling to give him a time frame.

Potter filed an application with the court for a public defender. He was told by the public defenders officer that he made too much money and was denied.

Judge Prewitt set an Aug. 8 council hearing date for Potter. He is being held in the Oregon County Jail at Alton with a bond set at $200,000.
