Horseshoe Bend man sentenced to 30 years for attack

Thursday, August 2, 2007

A Horseshoe Bend man has been sentenced to a total of 30 years in the Arkansas Department of Correction after pleading guilty July 26 to charges relating to the September 2006 attack of a Mountain Home motel clerk.

Norman Nilsen, 26, plead guilty in Baxter County Circuit Court to criminal attempt to commit aggravated robbery, first degree battery and theft of property.

According to Baxter County authorities, on Sept. 23, 2006, Nilsen entered the Mountain Home Best Western's business office around 4:45 a.m. to rent a room. The clerk, Lor Kha, 20, escorted Nilsen to his room where he then attacked her with a tire iron.

Kha was hit in the head several times with the tire iron before the attack was interrupted by a fellow employee who went to check on Kha after realizing she had been gone for several minutes.

When the attack was interrupted, Nilsen fled and was missing until Nov. 2 when Baxter County authorities learned Nilsen was in the custody of the Tustin Police Department in Orange County, California.

One of Nilsen's original charges -- criminal attempt to commit rape, a class A felony, was dropped as a part of a plea agreement during the July 26 hearing.
