If results of the first Grizzly Golf Challenge are any indication, members of the Missouri State University-West Plains golf team were ready as they headed to nationals.
The club, which includes Layne Hawkins, M.J. Clark and Brett Ward, all of Thayer, Jordan Slayton of Mountain Grove and Ben Knight of West Plains, easily handled their West Plains Country Club supporters and golf enthusiasts at the first ever Grizzly Golf Challenge May 11 and 12 at the country club.
The event was designed to give golf team members a chance to hone their skills in a competitive event before the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Men's Golf Championship that started May 20 at the Goose Pond Colony Resort in Scottsboro, Ala.
"Our goal was accomplished," volunteer coach Phil Wade said. "I was pleased with the way all five of them played. They played very well against some of our area's better golfers and easily won the team match play Friday and the individual match play Saturday."
The competition was conducted using the Ryder Cup point system, he added.
Area golfers who competed against the club team included Paul Knight, Tod Rose, Eric Judd, Larry Barton, Tim Rinker, Jeff McDaniel and Darren Petrus.
