Fire destroys seven buildings

Thursday, March 22, 2007

An attempt to burn leaves led to the total destruction of an unoccupied home, a mobile home and five sheds March 16.

At approximately 1:48 p.m. Tom Newman of 506 Bexar Road near Salem, called Fulton County 9-1-1 saying there was a fire on his property.

Newman said he had been burning leaves on his property and thought he had put out the fire.

However, shortly after he left the burn sight, he looked outside to see a mobile home, less than 50 yards from his residence on the property, engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from the Viola, Byron, Agnos/Glencoe and Salem fire departments responded and worked against the wind for three hours putting out the fire and preventing it from spreading to nearby structures, said Viola Fire Chief Boyd Dailey.

According to Dailey, the seven buildings lost in the blaze were already fully engulfed before fire crews arrived.

Despite the losses, firefighters managed to keep the fire from spreading to Newman's residence and barn.

As a precautionary measure, EMS personnel treated Newman at the site of the fire. No injuries were reported.
