If elected, Jewell won't be able to serve

Thursday, March 22, 2007

THAYER -- Thayer businessman Johnny Jewell announced last week he will not be seeking the south side alderman, or second ward alderman, position in the city of Thayer in the April 3 General Municipal Election.

Thayer Municipal Clerk Rosie Simpson said Jewell called her March 15 and wanted to know what he needed to do to remove his name from the election ballot.

"I referred him to the chief election official in Oregon County, Circuit Clerk Gary Hensley," Simpson said.

Hensley said Jewell called him early March 16 and told him he would be moving out of the Thayer city limits and could not accept the position of alderman if he was elected.

"I told him it was too late to remove his name from the election ballot," Hensley said.

"Our ballots have already been printed and must appear in the local newspaper (The South Missourian News) two weeks prior to the April 3 election," he said.

The Oregon County general and municipal election ballot was published in The South Missourian News March 22 and will be published again March 29, as state law requires.

Both Hensley and Simpson said they suggested Jewell contact the newspaper and announce that he had withdrawn his candidacy.

"Last week my wife and I found a place north of Brandsville on ZZ Highway that we just fell in love with and decided to move," Jewell said during a telephone conversation March 16.

He presented the following written statement to Simpson at Thayer City Hall: "I, Johnny Jewell, would like to take this time to ask voters not to vote for me in the April 3 Municipal Election. I will be changing residence after April. My wife and I will be moving out of town and I will not be able to accept the alderman position. Thank you to the fine citizens of Thayer."

Robert (Bob) Grimes currently serves as south side alderman. He will face Junior Brewer in the upcoming election.
