Alice Newsom Potter was born March 30, 1910, in Mammoth Spring, Ark., the daughter of the late Everett Mark Whitman and Daisy Shride Whitman and died Dec. 14, 2007, at the age of 97.
She was united in marriage Dec. 19, 1928, to Howard Newsom, who preceded her in death on July 27, 1968. To this union two children were born, Gerald Newsom, who preceded her in death Dec. 29, 1966, and Vanetta Newsom.
She was later married to Jess Potter and lived in Springfield, Mo. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Potter later made her home at the Montclair Retirement Center in Springfield.
For a short time during World War II she and her husband, Howard Newsom lived in Indiana and worked for a defense plant. At the end of the war, they made their home in Thayer, Mo., where they worked at the North End Grocery for the late Charles Cockman. They later owned and operated the Thayer Grocery and at the time of her death, Mrs. Potter was living with her daughter, Vanetta Carroll in West Plains, Mo.
Mrs. Potter was a long time member of St. Paul Methodist Church of Thayer, Mo.
She is survived by: her daughter, Vanetta Carroll of West Plains, Mo.; four grandchildren, Bruce Newsom of Strafford, Mo., Douglas Carroll and wife Christina of Ozark, Mo., Kirk Carroll and wife, Pearlie of Castle Rock, Colo., and April Carroll Mayfield and husband, Marty of West Plains; four great-grandchildren, Misty ?New-som, Dillon Carroll Blake Carroll and Brooklyn Mossier; two sisters, Vivia Spangler of Linden, Tenn., and Opal Honeycutt of Vicksburg, Miss.; one brother, John Whitman of St. Augustine, Fla.; several nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by:?her parents; her husband; her son, one grandson; Stanley Newsom; five sisters, Eva Johnson, Carrie Anderson, Cora Dodge, Violet Whitman and Gladys Whitman; and one brother, Russell Whitman.
Funeral services were held Dec. 18 at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer. Burial followed in the Thayer Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Carter Funeral Home of Thayer.
