Annual Canoe Race to stop in Calico Rock

Thursday, July 27, 2006

This year's 40th Annual Boy Scouts White River Canoe Race is scheduled to make a crew switch at the Highway 5 Bridge in Calico Rock on July 28 between 10 and 10:30 a.m.

Canoes will be put in at the boat landing, and members of the Chamber of Commerce and the 20/20 Group will welcome the racers with cold drinks and other refreshments, according to event organizers.

In past years, spectators -- including families of the rowers -- lined both sides of the bridge to watch the race, with several miles of river visible in both directions.

The canoes are scheduled to approach from the west, speed to the landing, and then launch again with fresh crews to continue the race on downstream.

The Chamber and 20/20 Group invite people to come to the bridge the morning of July 28 and share in this event.

KATV Channel 7 in Mountain Home was slated to have a film crew at Calico Rock to cover this portion of the race.

The Quapaw Boy Scout Council had sponsored the White River Canoe Race in past years.

This year's sponsor is the Adventure Club of the WestArk Boy Scout Council (Fort Smith).

The four-day race left from Bull Shoals State Park July 26 at 2 p.m., and is scheduled to arrive at Batesville July 29 at around 5 p.m.
