Grizzly Golf Classic a success for MS-WP

Approximately $14,000 was raised for the Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly basketball, volleyball and club golf team from the 12th annual Grizzly Golf Classic June 8 at the West Plains Country Club.

One hundred golfers took the tournament field on a beautiful, sunny afternoon that followed a stormy evening and a cool, cloudy morning, said Dr. Herb Lunday, Dean of Student Services at Missouri State-West Plains and chairman of the tournament committee.

Grand champions of the three-person-scramble event were Chuck Swift, Darren Petrus and Jim Jones who shot a 56. Top three teams in the Trophy Grizzly Flight were: first place, Blaine Burroughs, James Cooper and Dusty Miller, 58; second place, M. J. Clark, Brett Ward and Layne Hawkins, 58; third place, John Richards, Scott Corman and Frank James, 61.

Top three teams in the Blue Grizzly Flight were: first place, Gary York, Preston York and Craig Harrison, 64; second place, Phil Wade, Butch Steed and Justin Nelson, 64; and third place, John Adams, Bill Freeman and Dillon Crow, 64.

Top three teams in the Red Grizzly Flight were: first place, Tom Marhefka, Jonathan Bergman and Bob Eckman, 67; second place, Paul Knight, Mike Guffey and Ron Grennan, 67; and third place, Dr. Rob Martin, Dr. Richard Bowles and Dr. George Kramer, 67.

Top three teams in the Plainsman Flight were: first place, Vince Walters, Andy Trughillo and Scott Wood, 72; second place, Carr Ward, Dr. Herb Lunday and Brian Ostermann, 74; and third place, Bill Virdon, Dr. Marvin Fowler and Mancil Smith, 75.

The Dead Last Team in the Entire Tournament was Jim Rogers, David Crites and Sam Riggs with a round of 87. Prizes for the flight winners were courtesy of At Home Market in West Plains.

Several skill prizes were awarded. James Cooper won a $50 gift certificate at the West Plains Country Club, courtesy of Earl's Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep of West Plains, for the longest putt on hole No. 2. Scott Corman won a quail/chukar/pheasant hunt with dogs with 33rd Dist. State Sen. Chuck Purgason (R-Caulfield) for hitting closest to the pin on hole No. 6; Greg Beykirch won a $50 gift certificate at West Plains Country Club, courtesy of Earl's Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep of West Plains, for hitting closest to the pin on hole No. 12. Jay Gillen won a round of golf for two, plus cart, at Rivercliff Golf Course in Bull Shoals, Ark., and a $50 gift certificate for dinner at Gaston's White River Resort for the most accurate drive on hole No. 18.

There was no winner for the 2008 Chrysler Sebring convertible courtesy of Chrysler and Earl's Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep of West Plains for a hole-in-one on hole No. 8.
