Bond issue on ballot

MYRTLE -- The Couch R-1 Board of Education has called a special election to be held in the school district Aug. 7.

Couch Superintendent of Schools Tom Bull said the school district is asking the voters to increase the district's operating levy by 68 cents per $100 assessed valuation.

"If this proposition is approved, the adjusted operating levy of the district is estimated to be $3.43 per assessed valuation," Bull said.

He said this would result in the total tax levy at the school being unchanged. The debt service at the school was voted in many years ago to build a new junior high building at the school. He said that the debt service ends this year.

"If Proposition K passes this August it would allow our school to qualify for $5 million available in state funds for small schools with less than 350 students," he said. Bull said the district could receive as much as $58,000.

The superintendent said the funds are needed for improvements at the school especially in the grade school area.

"We need to upgrade the heating and cooling system and do some floor work at the grade school. We are looking at possibly new bleachers in the gym and also maybe air conditioning in the gym," he said.

Oregon County Clerk Gary Hensley said this will be the only election in the county in August and will be paid for by the Couch School District.

"Polls will open at 6 a.m. that morning and will close at 7 p.m. that evening," Hensley said.

He said the election will only pertain to voters in the Couch School District and the only polling place in the county will be at the school. Hensley said the issue would pass or fail by a simple majority.

Bull said in the near future some meetings are planned to inform the voters in the district about Proposition K.

"Voters need to understand there is no tax increase; we keep our same tax. There are some improvements that have to be made at our school one way or the other," Bull said.
