OREGON COUNTY -- The 2007 Oregon County American Cancer Society Relay for Life was held May 18 and 19 at the Thayer High School Football field. Relay for Life organizer Janie Thompson said this year's event was an outstanding success.
Thompson said before the actual event, her goal was for the teams in the county to raise $70,000. Last year the county raised just over $65,000. The goal was reached. Thompson reports over $75,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society by the 25 teams in the county.
"This year's planing committee deserves a special thanks for all the hard work they put into this year's Relay," she said. Thompson said there were a few hard times and some major hurdles were faced when organizing the event.
"Sometimes we wondered if we were going to be able to pull it off but with lots of help from the community, this year's Relay happened with only a few minor glitches," she said.
Thompson said this year's top fund raising team was Cousins for a Cure. They raised over $8,292. Saint Paul's United Methodist Church team finished a close second by raising $7,746.
The top individual fundraisers were: Robert Cicigoi and the traveling toilet which brought in over $4,000; Dana Roberts was second raising $2,360; Sonya Bateman raised $1,072; Randal Combs raised $1000; and Christopher Slisher raised $1,000.
Thompson said the local Relay for Life wrap-up meeting will be May 31 at 6:30 p.m. at Los Potrillos in Thayer.
"At this meeting we will be discussing the Relay, our success, what we can do to improve next year's event and how we can get more people to volunteer to participate in the planning committee portion of the relay," Thompson said.
