Cougars find success as hoops season tips off

Joey Stefka tossed in 17 points to help the Izard County Consolidated Cougars open the 2006 season with a win, as his squad topped Greers Ferry-West Side 54-39 Oct. 17 in the Mount Pleasant Classic.

The Cougars jumped out to a 19-11 lead after one and never looked back.

Kyle McCandlis followed with 11 points for the Cougs, while Adam Montgomery added eight, and James Morgan seven. Zac DeSanto had six, Scott Small three, and Ethan Porter two.

The Lady Cougars were dealt a 57-36 setback to the Greers Ferry-West Side Lady Eagles earlier in the evening.

Brittney Bailey paced ICC with seven, while Melissa Martin had six. Leathyr Spangler, Lane Norvold, Sarah Taylor, Kaylee Cooper and Keressa Campbell posted four points apiece. Haley Crotts had two, and Trace Grinnell one for the Lady Cougars.

The Cougars improved to 2-0 on the year with a 67-61 win over Kirby Oct. 20 in the Joe V. Jones Classic in Monette.

Stefka paved the way with 22 points, while McCandlis and Morgan followed with 15 points each. Small tossed in 11 in the six-point win for the Cougars.

ICC's busy opening week continued Oct. 21 as the Cougars topped Armorel 58-38 in Monette.

Montgomery had 15 points to pace his team, with Stefka and Small knocking in 10 each.

Behind a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double from Bailey, the Lady Cougars blitzed Turrell 63-32 Oct. 21.

ICC jumped on top 17-5 after one period and never looked back.

Taylor added 12, and Martin 10 for ICC.
