County fair may be back

Thursday, January 4, 2007

ALTON -- The Oregon County Fair may return.

A meeting to discuss the fair will be held Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Alton Elementary School Multipurpose Building.

The fair was last held in Oregon County in 1996.

Recently, Oregon County Extension Community Development Specialist Gary Cross, Extension Council Chairman Jim Hieskell and vocational agriculture leaders Janet Brewer and Nancy Alford toured the fair facilities and discussed the fair and activities related to the fair.

The group discussed the idea of the fair returning with the four county school vocational agriculture departments, and all four departments said they would be interested in seeing the Oregon County Fair return.

"The vo-ag people feel they would need about two years to develop interest among students and their parents and prepare for entries to the fair," Heiskell said. He said if the schools and 4-H groups in the county are going to participate in the fair, dates will have to be coordinated to stay away from regular school, summer school and other fair dates.

Heiskell said the biggest question among the group that met is how badly the citizens of the county want the fair back.

"Any successful fair must have a lot of people willing to participate in promoting the fair in both time and money," he said. Heiskell said despite numerous problems in organizing and bringing back the fair, "It seems to be a do-able project with a lot of community support."

Heiskell said this is a chance for the citizens of the county who want the fair to return to let their voice be heard by attending the meeting.
