Storms sweep area in 2006

January: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) gave White River Housing Development Corp. in Melbourne a $1,546,800 grant to build or rehabilitate rental housing with supportive services for the elderly.

The News Managing Editor David Cox, was elected president of the Arkansas Press Association Jan. 5.

Ten of Stephen Mitchell's former students from the Melbourne School District filed a civil suit against Mitchell Jan. 5 claiming he created uncomfortable situations and engaged in unacceptable behavior like inappropriate touching, exposing himself and initiating lewd acts. Mitchell was Melbourne's agricultural teacher and FFA sponsor before he was convicted of coercing male students into sexual acts in 2004.

Marcos Sanchez, 18, of Mount Pleasant was arrested and charged with manslaughter after crashing a vehicle that killed his passenger, Megan Hall, 17, of Batesville.

Authorities ruled the cause of death a homicide for a body that was found dismembered in a septic tank that belonged to the late Jerry Stevens who died Jan. 10. DNA tests results determined the body to be Bridgette Sellers, who disappeared on Peace Valley Road near Stevens' property May 9, 2003. Stevens was the only "person of interest" in the investigation.

February: Over 100 people lost their jobs after the Boeing Plant in Melbourne announced it would stop operations Feb 9. In less than a year Melbourne found a replacement. In October Bad Boy Mowers Inc. of Batesville announced it would begin manufacturing operations in the vacant building.

The Salem School District was one of only 20 school districts in the state to receive an A grade from the Arkansas Policy Foundation.

Donald Ham of Horseshoe Bend was found dead in his home Feb. 14 from smoke inhalation caused by a propane tank explosion.

March: Storms tore through the tri-counties March 9, causing significant damage. Authorities reported a roof torn off a trailer in Melbourne and a building in Brockwell. In Calico Rock there were downed power lines. In Salem the roof was blown off the buildings that housed Tangles Hair Care, J&J Accounting and Country Flowers.

Shane Shipp, 36, of Mammoth Spring led deputies from Fulton and Sharp counties on a high-speed chase that eventually ended on Fire Tower Road near Wirth.

Shawn Cox, the 29-year-old Mammoth Spring man who was arrested after jumping the White House fence in December 2005, went to the Fulton County Clerk's Office March 1 demanding they give him a marriage certificate for him and Chelsea Clinton.

Joshua Cox, 27, of Mammoth Spring was found and arrested in Peoria, Ill., March 22 after allegedly setting his girlfriend's house on fire while her son was inside asleep March 17. Joshua Cox is the brother of Shawn Cox.

April: After large hail battered Fulton County April 2, a FEMA catastrophe team was called to survey the damages.

Dewayne Vest of Oxford was shot and killed by Steven Pearson of Batesville April 11. After killing Vest with two shots to his body and one to the back of his head, Pearson committed suicide, according to authorities.

Shane Buckshot Haggins, 30, of Mammoth Spring was arrested and charged with capital murder April 14 after a 17-month-old child in his care died of severe blunt force trauma. Haggins was found dead from an apparent suicide in his cell at the Sharp County Jail Sept. 13

May: The Salem School Board adopted a random drug testing policy at their May 15 meeting.

Fulton County deputies arrested Rachel Hickinbotham of Horseshoe Bend and her boyfriend, Jacob Acord, of Glencoe May 18 for allegedly beating Rick Roberts of Salem at the Moose Lodge.

Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence defeated challenger Rick Kimble, and Fulton County Sheriff Walter Dillinger defeated Terry Dailey in the May 23 primary election.

June: Norris McGhee Jr., 6, of Germantown, Tenn., drowned in the Spring River June 10.

At their June 9 meeting the Salem School Board announced head football coach, Ed Kelley, and assistant coaches Chad Mitchell and Lucas Morris had resigned.
