History book will be cherished keepsake

Thursday, December 21, 2006

"Studying this local genealogy is addictive," said Fulton County Heritage Foundation Book Chairman Ron Plumlee.

Since the middle of 2005 Plumlee, along with 22 other Fulton County residents on the committee, has been working to put together the Fulton County Family History Book.

Plumlee said the concept for the book originated with the Fulton County Extension Homemakers Club in early 2005. The Fulton County Heritage Foundation formed around this idea.

"In the spring of 2005 the Heritage Foundation found a publisher who specifically handles this type of book, and this is when the book took off," he said.

Plumlee said the foundation has received over 620 family history articles. And though the final deadline was announced as Dec. 15, Plumlee said they would accept articles until the first of the new year.

After the beginning of January, the foundation will focus primarily on gathering business histories, church histories, school histories and memorial pages, according to Plumlee.

"A lot of volunteered time has been put into this," Plumlee said. "The finished product will be a great keepsake that will be a part of families (for) the next 100 years."

Plumlee said that approximately 450 advance orders have been placed for the book. "This is not near as many as we were hoping for. The more advanced sales, the more pages we can have," he said.

Advanced sales at the $49.95 price will continue through 2007, according to Plumlee. He said the foundation anticipates the finalized book arriving in early 2008.

"Some of us who think we're young enough are actually getting to be the old timers," Plumlee laughed. "We need this to hold on to our memories."
