No arrests in break-in

Thursday, January 25, 2007

No arrests have been made in the Jan. 5 break-in of the Family Dollar in Hardy.

Hardy Police Chief Ernie Rose said he does have suspects in the case. It remains under investigation.

Police were called to the store the morning of Jan. 5 in regards to a break-in, Rose said. When officers arrived they found someone had pulled layers of tin off the back of the building, torn out insulation and kicked out sheetrock to gain entry to the store, he said.

Once inside the thief or thieves broke the safe open with some sort of hammer and stole the cash and checks inside, Rose said. The loot has not been recovered, he said.

Rose has reviewed surveillance footage from nearby Downhome Country Kitchen in hopes of spotting suspicious activity in the area.

Similar break-ins have taken place recently in Salem, Thayer, Mo., and in the Jonesboro area, Rose said.
