John Ray Howard, son of the late George Washington Howard and Blanche Edna McCarrol Howard, was born July 10, 1929, in Stella, Ark. He died Jan. 16, 2007, in Piggott, Ark., at the age of 77.
He was united in marriage to Betty Sue Finley on April 19, 1951, in Batesville. To this union six children were born.
He was employed by Cessna and Boeing Aircraft industries. After moving to New Mexico, he was employed as a pipeline contractor. He enjoyed playing music, and played at clubs in the Albuquerque area. He was of the Baptist faith.
Howard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Howard of Piggott; three sons, Frank Howard of Grand Junction, Colo., James Howard of Los Lunas, N.M. and Phil Howard of Albuquerque, N.M.; three daughters, Jacquie Black of Elk City, Okla., Suzi Howard of Decauter, Ga., and Teri Michelle Howard of Cartersville, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Scott Guidry, Lou Donna Malone, Austin Smyth, Erin Gibbins, Janet Howard, Sarah Howard, Jennifer Ramie and P.J. Howard; five great-grandchildren, Jamie, Riley and Zack Smyth and Lauren and Adam Gibbins; local nieces and nephews, Joe Davidson, Pat Dvidson, Paula Cone, Janet Teague, Eddie Howard, Ann Hopper and Pam Turner, all of Melbourne; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Boyce Howard and Roman Howard; a halfbrother, Hubert Howard; and three sisters, Lois Davidson, Anna Moore and Louise Bisson.
Memorial services were held Jan. 20 at the Roman and Billy Howard Memorial Chapel in Melbourne with Ricky Burke and Howard Black officiating. Arrangments were by Eddie's Family Funeral Home.
