Junior VFW unit search under way

Thursday, November 16, 2006

MAMMOTH SPRING -- Langston Vincent Lunn VFW Post 7831 of Mammoth Spring is seeking to start a junior girls unit in the Mammoth Spring area.

District 2 Auxiliary President Sue Vanderpool said a minimum of 10 girls is needed to get the unit started.

"Eligibility for membership is open for girls 5 years old to 16 who are daughters, foster daughters, stepdaughters, sisters, half sisters, foster sisters and stepsisters of members of the VFW, or of men and women eligible for membership to the VFW," Vanderpool said.

She said the auxiliary goal is to support, involve, encourage and provide each member of the junior girls unit with the tools, knowledge and enthusiasm necessary to carry on the mission of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. "Also to have fun and to experience the satisfaction of helping our veterans and communities," Vanderpool said.

Some of the programs girls would be eligible for are: a scholarship, hospital service pins for completing volunteer hours in VA hospitals, nursing homes, and hospitals, contests such as the Young American Creative Patriotic Art contest, Outstanding Young Volunteer of the Year, Patriot's Pen contest and The Voice of Democracy contest.

Vanderpool said one of the new programs started this year is each junior girl unit member submitting an article before Dec. 31, entitled "Why and How I Support our Troops" to the National editor in chief of the Ladies VFW Magazine will be put into a drawing. She said two winners will be chosen and each winner will receive a CD player.

It is too late for this year, but each year, junior girls who complete three special projects between July 31 and Aug. 31 will have their names put into a drawing to attend the Statue of Liberty celebration (with one chaperone). This trip includes round trip airfare plus two night's lodging,

The girls will be responsible for promoting cancer awareness, helping provide assistance with fundraising and are eligible for one cancer grant as a continuous junior girl unit member.

She said the District 2 VFW and Ladies Auxiliary meeting will be held at the Mammoth Spring VFW Post Home Nov. 19 at noon. The meeting will start at 1 p.m. and all VFW members are urged to attend.

For more information about the junior girls unit call Dorothy Parks at 625-7667 or Vanderpool at 625-3957.
