A Cave City man is charged with two counts of rape after he allegedly had sex with a 12-year-old girl.
Jeffery Riggs, 30, is charged with two counts of the class Y felony. He is being held in the Sharp County Jail on a $180,000 bond. He was arrested Sept. 20 by Sharp County Detective Mark Counts and Detective Sgt. David Huffmaster.
The young girl's mother and stepfather came into the Sharp County Sheriff's Office Sept. 11 and told Counts they suspected their daughter had been having a sexual relationship with Riggs, Counts said.
The mother told Counts she learned Sept. 8 that her daughter had skipped school all week. A friend of the 12-year-old had told the mother she had been skipping school to be with Riggs, Counts said. The friend also told the mother she suspected the two had been having sex, Counts said.
Riggs was interviewed by Counts and Det. Sgt. David Huffmaster Sept. 18. Riggs said he knew the girl had missed four days of school, Counts said. One day she was with Riggs, watching him haul hay, Counts said. Riggs said the girl had a crush on him and had attempted to kiss him before, Counts said.
The girl's mother called Counts Sept. 19 and notified him of a letter Riggs had allegedly written to her daughter. The letter said he missed her and will always love her, Counts said.
Counts went to speak to the young girl's friend. The friend told detectives the girl has said she loves Riggs and admitted she and Riggs had had sex, Counts said. The friend said she has seen the girl and Riggs kiss on several occasions, including while in the hayfield, Counts said.
The young girl later denied the allegations and told police the only time she had kissed Riggs was once on the cheek before he left to go to North Carolina, Counts said.
Riggs was called for another interview Sept. 20. At that time he admitted he had been having a sexual relationship with the girl, Counts said. Riggs said they had had sex twice, Counts said. Riggs was then arrested and booked in the county jail.
