Airport to be upgraded with help from grant

Thursday, January 24, 2008

THAYER -- Thayer Mayor Merle Williams gave Thayer City Council members an update on the progress of upgrading the Thayer Airport at the Jan. 8 council meeting.

The city recently received a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) for $90,000 to do the upgrading at the airport. Williams said it is a matching grant with the city kicking in 10 percent of the funds needed to complete the project.

He told council members the runway would be seal coated over the asphalt, re-painted with new stripping and numbers on the runway. He said due to the cold weather it would probably be spring before the project gets underway.

During the public participation of the meeting a resident of Pine street, Ed Beach, requested a street be constructed behind his property because a street is shown on the city map.

The mayor turned the project over to Alderman Al Clark and Alderman Mike Harber to look into the request. The mayor did say it was not the responsibility of the city to build roads.

Another visitor to the council meeting was Bonnie Chamness. She was there to let council members know that she planned to start a daycare in her home in the Barton Hill area. Barton Hill is a residential area and the council explained that no large signs and several other rules have to be followed so the area remains a residential district and not a business district.

A representative from the Schultz, Durham and Rapp firm in West Plains reported on the audit of the city and told the council the city received a good audit.

The council voted to reimburse two city employees, Brian Trantham and Jake Hatfield, for the cost of the training they recently completed.

In closed session the council voted to hire Tim Squires as a full time employee with the water department after he had completed his 90 day probation period.
