A one-car wreck July 4 cost an Ozark Acres man his life.
Alan Smolder, 18, died at a Memphis, Tenn., hospital July 5 from injuries he sustained in the crash.
The wreck occurred around 7:15 p.m. July 4 on South Summit Ridge in Ozark Acres, said Sharp County Deputy Jesse Wells, who serves the Ozark Acres community.
Larry Pleva, 39, of Ozark Acres was driving a 1984 Chevrolet Camaro northbound on South Summit Ridge near the Ozark Acres Suburban Improvement District office when he topped a hill on a curve, Wells said. Pleva lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree, Wells said.
Pleva and Smolder, who was the only passenger in the car, were transported to Randolph County Hospital by Spring River Paramedic Ambulance Service. Air-Evac attempted to transport the men by air but could not land because of adverse weather conditions, Wells said.
Both men were later transferred to Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis, Wells said. Pleva, who was still in the trauma ward July 7, was listed in good condition, according to a hospital spokesman.
The investigation is continuing and no citations had been issued as of press time July 10. Wells would not comment whether alcohol is considered a contributing factor in the wreck.
