Homer "Vern" Lavern Phillips was born Oct. 11, 1928, the son of Homer Phillips and Lena Phillips McSpadden in Sidney, Ark. He died July 24, 2006, in Garland, Texas.

He married Ernestine Hatfield on June 8, 1952, in Batesville. They had one daughter, Robin Hedstrom of Fort Worth, Texas.

He was a graduate of Sidney High School. Prior to his marriage he served for three years in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked at the Jacksonville Air Force Base for 11 years, and also completed training to become a mechanic. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 10007.

He loved NASCAR, professional basketball and animals. He was a Mark Martin fan and a Dallas Mavericks fan.

Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and a sister-in-law, Nellie Qualls of Mt. Pleasant. He is also survived by a stepbrother, Carthel McSpadden of Cave City and a stepsister, Mary Fulbright of Searcy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, an infant child, two nephews and his son-in-law, Eric Hedstrom.

Funeral services were held July 28 at the Faith-Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Batesville. Burial followed at the Maxville Cemetery north of Cave City with arrangements under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.
