Melbourne draws bead on Southwestern Zone title

Thursday, August 10, 2006

Devon Melbourne of Hardy was certainly in the "zone" for the Southwestern Zone Trap Shoot recently.

The Southwest Zone Shoot consists of trap shooters from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Missouri, Louisiana, Kansas and Colorado and is a part of four zones which break up the United States for trap shooting competition.

Melbourne shot a 98 for the first round of singles and then followed with a straight 100 for the 200-bird event.

Tied with two shooters from the Oklahoma shoot, and two shooting from New Mexico, Melbourne went back to the line where he continued to be in the "zone," shooting a straight 50.

Down to two shooters, Melbourne was back to the line shooting against a shooter from New Mexico.

Shooting another straight 50, Melbourne went on to become the Southwestern Junior Singles Zone Champion.

Melbourne shot 298 out of 300 birds and added another title to his growing collection of championship hardware.

Fueled by the intensity that came from the competition, Melbourne said he now looks forward to the Grand Nationals next month at Sparta, Ill., to face his competition on the same trap field.
