The Izard County Consolidated Cougars wasted little time in taking care of Melbourne in 2AA-North baseball action March 28.
The Cougars scored seven runs through the first two innings of play, en route to a 13-0 win over the Bearkatz.
ICC added five more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to keep Melbourne at bay.
Scott Small picked up the shutout win on the hill for the Cougars in five innings worth of work. Small gave up four hits and fanned five on the afternoon.
Curtis Clark logged two hits and three RBIs for ICC, while Jacob Grindle, Steven Walker and Adam Montgomery had two hits and two runs-batted-in each for the Cougars.
The Cougars picked up their second conference win of the week March 30 with a 6-5 victory over Calico Rock.
With the game locked at 5-all after six innings, Jeremy Burns reached base with one out in the top of the seventh by drilling a hit past the Pirate shortstop.
With two outs in the frame, Kyle McCandlis reached base on an error, allowing Burns to come home and score what turned out to be the game-winner.
Montgomery picked up the victory on the hill, complete with five strikeouts. At the plate, Montgomery and Brett Haney had a homer apiece.
