Former Salem resident publishes book

PublishAmerica recently published My Awesome Journey with Jesus: A Trek Down Memory Lane by Vada Lee Barkley of Oklahoma City, Okla., formerly of Salem.

Events in this book span the most radically changing century in history. Beginning with her mother's wedding, the author traces divine leadership throughout the 20th and into the 21st century.

The book includes Americana, nostalgia, trauma, financial struggles, the Great Depression, educational pursuits, travels, church activities, romance, vocational trials and triumphs, health concerns, a near-death experience and the thrill of the Twilight Zone.

At age 79, Barkley was miraculously delivered from a critical illness. Doctors gave her a 1-percent chance to live and a lesser chance to keep her sanity. As a part of her therapy, she became a full time author.

My Awesome Journey With Jesus traces God's leadership in the life of a widow's child from the foothills of the Ozarks. It ends with a challenge to the reader to seek and follow God's plan.

Barkley was born Sept. 28, 1919, near Salem. After graduating from high school she earned her BA degree from Southern Nazarene University and her MA from the University of Oklahoma. For her successful teaching and church music ministry career. The received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Southern Nazarene University. Computer illiterate at age 82, she has published 10 books designed for pastors, laymen and/or seniors. She is listed in the "Who's Who of American Women" and "Contemporary Authors."
