Coroner requests cooler

Thursday, August 10, 2006

The living aren't the only ones who require public services.

The Fulton County Quorum Court, at their July 13 meeting approved the purchase of a cooler at the request of Fulton County Coroner Steven Barker for the storage of bodies. He said he needs the unit to make more room at his place of business, Barker Funeral Home.

Barker said the unit will hold up to three bodies and is portable, which will allow it to be transported to wherever future coroners operate from.

The quorum court appropriated $4,850 for the storage cooler. Besides the initial cost, the county will have to pay shipping and handling on the item.

In other business:

Write-in sheriff candidate Charles Dabbs of Salem addressed the court. Dabbs requested a complete report on the 9-1-1 fund. He said people are concerned about the 9-1-1 system and whether it's properly used. He said there are questions whether such a system is of any value in a small county.

Dabbs said the nude shows on the river were brought up several times while he campaigned in Mammoth Spring. He said the quorum court should look into writing an ordinance that would address the problem. The quorum court took no action on the issue during the meeting.

The quorum court reappointed Shanna MaGuffee to the library board. A position on the hospital board remains open.

The quorum court appropriated $6,694 from the road department into the culvert fund. The culvert fund is for sales to individuals who need a culvert on their property. It's taken out of money originally deposited in the road department fund.

The quorum court appropriated $4,909.44 from the sheriff's fund to the county general to finish paying for a new car at the sheriff's office.
