Garl W. Sutherland, 84, of Cherokee Village died July 31, 2006, at the Fulton County Hospital in Salem.
He was born Nov. 7, 1921, in Ladonda, Texas, the son of Jim Sutherland and Corine (McElhaney) Sutherland.
He was united in marriage to Velma Cherry on Aug. 2, 1944, in San Francisco, Calif.
Sutherland was a veteran of the United States Navy. He retired from the Navy after 20 years of service and went to work in the space program as an engineer for the Honeywell Company. Sutherland retired in Maryland, but having grown up in the Fulton and Sharp County area and having many fond memories, he moved back to Sharp County with his wife, Velma, 20 years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Velma Sutherland of the home; two daughters, Janet Carpenter of Las Vegas, Nev., and Judy Nunnally of Boca Ratan, Fla.; one brother, Doyle Sutherland of Holly Springs, Miss.; two sisters, Vernile Case of South Carolina; and Nita Gilstrap of Holly Springs; four grandchildren, Dena Buchanan, Jeff Carpenter, Ian Buchanan and Jason Carpenter; one great-grandson, J.P. Watson; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lee Sutherland of Prattsville, Ala.
The funeral services were held on Aug. 4 at the Tri-County Funeral Home in Highland with burial following in the Camp Cemetery at Camp, Ark. Bro. Tom O'Neal officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of the Tri-County Funeral Home of Highland.
Pallbearers were JoeLynn Bond, Bob Taylor Bobby Wood, Jeff Carpenter, Jason Carpenter and Ian Nunnally.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Camp Cemetery or to the Children's Home in Paragould, Ark.
