The ICC Lady Cougars and the Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds are old friends.
Not only do they hook up regularly in 2AA-North Conference play, but the Lady Cougars are one of only three teams to have handed a loss to Sloan-Hendrix this year.
The Lady Greyhounds got their revenge on ICC as the two squads squared off in second round action in the A-AA bracket of the NEA Tournament at the Arkansas State University Convocation Center Dec. 27.
The Lady Cougars rallied from seven points down in the fourth period to grab the lead, but they just couldn't keep Sloan-Hendrix from advancing with a 62-53 win.
Trailing 50-43 with 3:54 left in the game, ICC roared back with an 8-zip run to grab the lead at 51-50 with 2:44 left on the clock.
Lauren Cunningham (10 points) provided the first five points of the Lady Cougar run, while Ariel Yancey added the last three.
Mandy Haney (17 points) dropped in a shot in the lane to give ICC a 53-52 lead at the 2:14 point of the fourth, but that proved to be the Lady Cougars' last score of the game as the Lady Greyhounds (15-3) were not to be denied.
Sloan-Hendrix fought off the ICC comeback with a trey and clutch free throw shooting, hitting five-of-six from the charity stripe in the last 20 seconds of the contest, to knock their conference rivals out of the NEA Tournament.
Laura Gaskins tossed in 10 points for the Lady Cougars, who fall to 7-9 on the year.
The ICC Cougars have been truckin' along on quite a roll as of late.
This hot streak took a bit of a hit Dec. 23 as the Cougars dropped their first round matchup with the Delaplaine Indians in the A-AA bracket of the NEA Tournament.
The Indians, members of the 3A Conference, outscored ICC 29-16 in the fourth period, en route to a 85-66 victory.
Justin Burns paced the Cougars with 21 points, including four treys for the game.
Allen Roberts added 14, while Jason Sherrell tallied 10 points for ICC.
