James W. Marshall, son of Will and Josie Shawcrass Marshall died Jan. 1, 2004, at Bell Trace Health and Living Center in Bloomington, Ind.
He was born and raised in the Church of the Brethren in Anderson, Ind., and spent his adult life making music in the service of the Lord. His voice was his instrument and he took every opportunity to use it, whether it be the choir, a quartet or solo.
He married Anna Mae Clem Oct. 17, 1941, while he was in the service at Fort Benning, Ga. Born to this union were two boys, James I. and Thomas J. Jim married Lynette P. Brown in September of 1976, and Tom married Janice L. Williams in October 1984. He had three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: Kevin and his wife, Tara, live in Anderson and have two children -- Gavin 4, and Sydni, 1-1/2. Norman had his wife, Chris, live in Zanesfield, Ohio, and have three children, Zane 11, Zoey 5, and Zayla 3. Kelly lives in Bloomington, Ind. He loved each and every one. He had two sisters -- Mary Bell Crim and India May Elsea. Both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his wife, in February 2001.
In March of 1977, the Marshals retired, Anna Mae from GM, and James from Sears, and moved to Cherokee Village, Ark. There, they attended Grace Evangelical Free Church and as always, Marshall was active in the church. While in Arkansas, he formed a barbershop quartet, the "Senior Class." In December of 1997, they moved to Bloomington, Ind., to be close to their eldest son, Jim. In Bloomington they attended the United Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service was at the Church of the Brethren in Anderson, Ind., on Jan. 18 with arrangements under the direction of Allen Funeral Home of Bloomington, Ind.
