John DeLoss McGuire

A former Thayer businessman was killed early Wednesday morning Sept. 8, 2004, in an accident on I-30 east of Dallas, Texas. John De Loss McGuire, the former owner of Nettie's Cafeteria and Restaurant in Thayer, was killed when the semi he was driving hit the rear of another semi that was stopped in traffic near Greenville.

John DeLoss McGuire was the son of the late John DeLoss Mcguire Sr. and Barbara A. Hoeniges McGuire and was born April 28, 1936, in Bloomington, Ill. He died Sept. 8, 2004, in Dallas, Texas.

He was married to Carol Cochran June 20, 1959, in Kansas City, Kan.

Besides being a farmer, he was a truck driver, driving for Priority America for 13 years and received numerous awards including the Ambassador of Safety Award.

He, along with his wife, owned and operated Dogwood Trails Restaurant in Thayer for many years. He was an offset printer, working for Thayer News and Williams Printing for several years. He was a Seaman, serving in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1959. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and was of the Catholic Faith.

Survivors include his wife, Carol, of the home in Couch, Mo.; two sons -- Daniel DeLoss McGuire and wife, Karen, of Austin, Texas, and Samuel Paul McGuire and wife, Linda, of Elizabethtown, Pa.; four grandchildren -- Larry, Ashlie, Haley and Chancellor; three brothers -- Jerome McGuire of Frankford, Ill,, Anthony McGuire of New Lennox, Ill., and Timothy McGuire of Bloomington, Ill.; and a sister, Betty, of Naples, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The funeral service was held Sept. 13 at First Baptist Church at Thayer, Mo., with Gerald Bounds officiating. Burial was in the Thayer Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Carter Funeral Home Inc. of Thayer, Mo.
