ICC wins regional chess tourney

The Izard County High School Chess Team won the Class AA Regional Chess Tournament at Bald Knob High School Jan. 31. Aragon Wyatt was named co-most valuable player of the tournament for winning five of five games.

Izard County High School had five players who placed in the top 10 individually.

In addition to Wyatt, Steven Haney, John Davis, Tyler Wallis and Randy Sutton finished fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, out of 44 participants. ICC team members had a combined record in the tournament of 20 wins, four losses and one draw.

In the team competition, ICC had 17 points and West Side Greers Ferry, Bradford and Rosebud tied for second with 12 points each. Steve Manes is the coach of the ICC team.

The tournament was administered by officials from the Chess Association for Arkansas Schools and was sanctioned by the Arkansas Activities Association.

This is the third consecutive year that Izard County High School has won the regional and the team will attempt to win their third consecutive state championship at Searcy Feb. 21.
