Rita Bernice Simmons, 73, died Aug. 4, 2004, at Alton, Mo. Born Sept. 13, 1930, at Alton, she was the daughter of the late Ocea and Almeda Simmons. A 1948 graduate of Alton High School, she had worked many years at the shoe factory in Birch Tree and in helping care for others.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Wainscott of West Plains; four brothers -- Robert Simmons, Roscoe Simmons and wife, Joan, Larry Simmons and wife, Daisy, all of Alton, Gilbert Simmons and wife, Pauline, of Pomona; nine nieces and nephews -- Tammy Curtis, Randy Simmons and Wesley Simmons of Alton, Jeff Simmons and Paula Sterner of West Plains, Sonya Harmon of Goldsboro, N.C., Nancy Yaqoob of Elmont, N.Y., Gwen Simmons of Point Lookout, Mo., and Kathryn Phillips of Grapevine, Texas; and several great and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Danny; a sister, Glenda; and a sister-in-law, Faye Simmons.
A graveside service was Aug. 4 at Smith Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Carter Funeral Home Inc. of Thayer, with the Rev. David Scott of the Alton United Methodist Church officiating.
