Independence escapee nabbed in Ash Flat

Thursday, March 25, 2004

Staff Writer

Ash Flat Police captured an inmate March 15 who had escaped from the Independence County jail while on a work release.

According to the Independence County Sheriff's Office, Jennifer Wilson, 18, of Ash Flat was in jail on 24 counts of hot checks. She had been in jail since March 4 and was performing community service in Independence County to pay off her fines during her jail sentence. On March 12 she walked off from her service. An escape warrant was issued from Independence County.

Police received a tip that Wilson and her boyfriend, Chris Thomas, were staying in Ash Flat, said Ash Flat officer Tim McComas.

Thomas had a warrant for a probation violation, McComas said.

"We received a call that Monday from Independence County and were told Wilson could be at her father's home on Branscum Road," McComas said.

McComas and Arkansas State Trooper Ronnie Qualls went to the Ash Flat home but no one answered the door.

Later police received another call that Wilson had returned to the home.

Police obtained a search warrant for the home. The residence had been broken into and some of Wilson's clothes were missing, McComas said. She was not at the home.

A while later, police received another call stating that Wilson was at the home.

Ash Flat Police and Sharp County deputies returned to the home and found her hiding outside the home underneath a truck.

Wilson was arrested and taken into custody. When she was searched by police, officers found and confiscated a knife.

Wilson was taken to the Independence County jail where she is serving the remainder of her sentence.
