The Viola School District has received two $500 science mini-grants and a $6,000 Stuart grant, and the Cave City School District has received one $500 mini-grant from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation.
The Stuart Grant gives science teachers in grades 5 through 8 money to buy classroom participation systems, a projector, a lap top computer and peripheral items. The mini-grants give teachers in grades 5 through 8 money to purchase consumable items for hands-on experiments.
Teachers using the mini-grants are permitted to buy kits if they are grade standard and they meet state frameworks requirements, but are not permitted to buy textbooks, paper goods and instruments.
The grants are provided through the Arkansas Science and Technology Authority. Each grant is three years in length and is given to encourage hands-on learning and increase the level of interest in science in Arkansas' middle schools.
