William Erwin Cowen, 92, of Mammoth Spring, Ark., died Aug. 1, 2004, at Shady Oaks Health Care in Thayer, Mo.

Born, May 11, 1912, in Mammoth Spring, he was the son of Arch Cowen and Savannah Pierce Cowen.

He was married to Nannie Mae Hunt. He later married Joyce Smith Lewis on Jan. 9, 1963.

He was a talented carpenter and contracted and built many beautiful houses. He was a member of the Church of Christ, a former Elder of the Church and a former editor of the Fulton County Gospel News. He loved working, gardening and fishing.

Survivors include a son, Hurley Cowen and wife, Marion of Fryatt, Ark.; a daughter, Carol McCord and husband, Tommy, of Winfield, Mo.; a step-son, Larry Lewis of Eleva, Wis.; two step-daughters -- Hasseltine Goetting of Mammoth Spring and Arlene Bishop and husband, Lyle, of Mountain Home; two sisters -- Elsie Miller of Lees Summit, Mo., and Zee Apple-gate of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Velva Buchanan of Mammoth Spring; a son-in-law, Darrell Martin of Troy, Mo.; eight grandchildren -- Vickie McCord, Aleta McCord, Alan McCord, Jeff Martin, Wesley Martin, Terri Martin McDaniel, Randy Cowen and Shelly Cowen Carter; six step-grandchildren -- Sharon Goetting Miller, Joyce Goetting Dills, Linda Goetting Vincent, Karen Bishop Collins, Lewis Bishop and Brent Lewis; 16 great-grandchildren -- Derek Cowen, Brittany Cowen, Steven McCord, Jennifer McCord, Dana McCord, Paul Martin, Samuel Martin, Dustin Martin, Krystal Vaughn, Jennifer Carter, Jessica Deckard, Chance Elliott, Rachel Harke, Laura Jo Harke, Abby Marshal and Amanda Owens; 11 step-great-grandchildren -- Richard Dills Jr., Rachel Dills Sims, Zach Miller, Jo Ellen Miller, Whitney Vincent, Trevor Vincent, Isaac Vincent, Robert Luther, Shane Collins. Cody Collins and Katy Bishop; three great-great-grandchildren -- Braden Vaughn, Alexia Cowen and Natalie Cowen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arch and Savannah Pierce Cowen; his first wife, Nannie Mae Hunt Cowen and his second wife, Joyce Smith Lewis Cowen; a daughter, Jacqueline Martin; two granddaughters -- Linda Cowen Collins and Karen Cowen; a brother, James Cowen and two sisters -- Anna Lee Blackburn and Irene Nichols.

The funeral was Aug. 5 at Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer with Ted Clarke officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Mammoth Spring with arrangements by Carter Funeral Home Inc of Thayer.
