Leona Nelson, 74, died Aug. 31, 2004, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kan. She was born April 8, 1930, at Salem, Ark., the daughter of Edgar and Mattie Johnson Hall.
She has been a resident of Liberal for the past 50 years. She managed the Petroleum Club for many years and had been a waitress and manager of the Country Club. She was a 1949 graduate of Salem High School.
On Oct. 17, 1951, she married A.J. "Blackie" Nelson at Clayton, N.M.
Survivors include four sons -- Jim Billinger and wife, Collene of Viola, Rocky Nelson and wife, Emily of Ft. Collins, Colo., Jack Nelson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Buck Nelson of Phoenix, Ariz.; three daughters -- Rhonda Bartling and husband, Randy of Grand Island, Neb., Rene Nelson of Liberal, and Ramona Schwindt and husband, Nick, of Liberal; a twin sister, Iona Davis of Moscow, Kan.; 24 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers -- Vertis, Johnson, Calvin and Eli Hall; five sisters -- Bitha Barker, Cecil Clayton, Roxie Mae Church, Veda Ann Otto and Marie Davis; one granddaughter, Jennifer Dubbs.
The funeral service was Sept, 3 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rockey Ratts presiding. Burial followed at Arkalon Cemetery. Memorials may be send to First United Methodist Church in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home of 1212 W. 2nd, Liberal, KS 67901.
