Katie "Did" lead Lady Bluebirds to victory

The ICC Cougars hosted the Mt. Pleasant Bluebirds for a trio of games last week, and took two victories. In the junior girls' matchup, the junior Lady Cougars posted a 43-30 win.In the senior girls' matchup, the Lady Cougars were faced with shutting down one of the most explosive scorers in the state, Katie "Did" Caraway.

Mandy Haney crashed the boards and put back a rebound to put ICC on the board first, but a couple of quick scores by Tamra Love and Caraway put Mt. Pleasant up 4-2.

Melissa Sherrell tipped the ball up and kept it alive, and then got the stickback to knot the game at 4-all, but a trio of buckets from Love, Alauna Wolfe and Caraway put the Lady Bluebirds up 10-4.

Jessica Horton took the home-run pass from Sherrell for a layup, but Caraway and Amy Fulbright got back- to-back buckets to give Mt. Pleasant a 14-6 lead after one.Caraway hit 4 quick points to open the second, and then Fulbright hit a couple of charity tosses to push the Mt. Pleasant lead to 20-6 before Sherrell could hit the turnaround off the baseline to stop the run.

Caraway nailed a trey and Regan Smith hit two free throws to stake the Lady Bluebirds to a 25-8 lead, but Sherrell hit a couple of free throws at the 4:21 mark in the second to put ICC into double digits.

Caraway kept up the relentless attack, canning a 12 footer off the right wing, and Smith drained a trey to give Mt. Pleasant a 30-10 advantage.

Back-to-back buckets by Alyce Bailey and Sherrell cut into the deficit, but Caraway hit back-to-back jumpers in the lane, then got help from a Smith deuce and a free throw by Fulbright to put Mt. Pleasant up 37-14.

Gay Blair hit a free throw for the Lady Cougars, but Tracy Wilson knocked down a short jumper to put the Lady Bluebirds up 39-15 at the half.

ICC put 9 points on the board in the third quarter to Mt. Pleasant's 14, sending the game into the fourth quarter with the Lady Cougars trailing 53-24.

After Mt. Pleasant increased their lead to 57-24, ICC ripped off 7 unanswered points, but couldn't close the gap quickly enough, dropping a 61-33 decision.

Scoring for the Lady Cougars: Horton (8), Sherrell (8), Haney (6), Blair (3), Irvin (2), Moser (2), and Yancey (2).For the Lady Bluebirds: Caraway (25), Fulbright (7), Love (6), Wolfe (6), Smith (5), Davis (4), Hames (4), Herrington (2), and Wilson (2).

In the senior boys' contest, Mt. Pleasant scratched first when Robby Webb hit the leaner off the left side, then Jesse Love knocked down an NBA trey from the left wing, putting the Bluebirds up 5-0.

The Cougars hit the scoring column when Allen Roberts hit one of two charity tosses, but Casey McCullough hit one for the Bluebirds, setting the score at 6-1.

Shane Irgens hit a reverse layup in traffic, then Rex Burrow hit a free throw to pull ICC to within 2 at 4-6.McCullough hit a trey from the left corner and Love hit a layup on the break, putting the Bluebirds on top to the tune of 11-4.

Roberts and Joe Hawkins hit back-to-back buckets, and Robert Stephens drilled two free throws to pull the Cougars to within 1 at 11-10, but a buzzer-beater trey from McCullough gave the Bluebirds a 14-11 lead after one.

The Cougars went on a tear in the second, outscoring the Bluebirds 13-4 to take the lead for good. Irgens led the way with 7 points, with Roberts, Hawkins, and Burrows knocking down 2 each, giving the Cougars a 23-18 halftime lead.

Irgens opened the third with a couple of free throws and a 12 footer off the right baseline sandwiched around a Robby Webb deuce for the Bluebirds. Burrow stuck back a rebound and Roberts hit a layup on the break, giving the Cougars their first double digit lead of the night.

Robby Webb hit a couple of free throws to pull the Bluebirds to within 9, but Josh Jackson hit one to keep the Cougars up by 10.

The Bluebirds outscored the Cougars 8-4 to finish off the third quarter, but ICC would take a 36-30 lead into the final stanza.

The Bluebirds made their run, ripping off 5 unanswered points to pull to within a point, but Hawkins hit the scoop shot to put ICC back up by 3.

After Robby Webb hit a bank shot off the right side to pull the Bluebirds back to within 1, Hawkins and Irgens nailed two free throws each to push the Cougar lead up to 6 points at 43-37.

Robby Webb hit a turnaround off the left baseline, but Hawkins hit the backdoor layin and Irgens completed the old-fashioned three-point play after getting fouled on a stickback, putting the Cougars up 48-39.

The Cougars went on a 10-4 run to put some cushion on their lead, with Burrow accounting for 6 of the points, putting the Cougars up 58-43 with time running low.

Robby Webb got a stickback to pull the Bluebirds to within 13 points, but a layup by Burrow on the break with Roberts put ICC up 60-15.

The Bluebirds got a deuce by Joey Webb, but ICC got a bucket by Roberts and a free throw by Chris Taylor to set the final score of 63-47 in favor of the Cougars.

Scoring for the Cougars: Irgens (20), Burrow (15), Roberts (11), Hawkins (10), Dockins (2), Jackson (2), Stephens (2), and Taylor (1).

For the Bluebirds: Robby Webb (16), Love (12), McCullough (10), Joey Webb (6), Young (2), and Boutwell (1).
