Trooper Shaw commended for service

Thursday, May 6, 2004

Arkansas State Trooper Todd N. Shaw received a commendation April 30 for meritorious service from the Arkansas State Police Commission. Shaw, a member of Troop I, which covers Fulton and Izard counties, was confronted by armed fugitive Robert Louis Salter, 56, Feb. 1 in the town of Nunley, located in Polk County.

Shaw's Troop I Commander, G.B. Harp, said Salter was wanted on federal charges and had warrants out for his arrest. He said Shaw, officers from the Arkansas State Police and the SWAT team converged on Salter's fortified house. Salter tried to escape and came face to face with Shaw. Salter raised his rifle and Shaw fired his weapon, injuring Salter, Harp said.

"Todd's a fine young man and very deserving of this award. What makes it even more heroic is the assignment in Polk County was something he volunteered to do, not something he had to do," said Harp.

Officials at the Arkansas State Police office said Salter was treated for his injuries and is in the custody of U.S. marshals. Salter is facing a variety of federal charges.
