John Gilbert Spurlock, 59, of Viola, Ark., son of the late Afred Edward and Kathryn Brashears Spurlock, was born May 16, 1945, in Viola. He died Sept. 16, 2004, at Salem, Ark.
He married Beverly Sue Garner Aug. 3, 1968, at Lanton, Mo., and to this union two sons were born. He spent his working years as husband, father, grandfather, and a truck driver.
He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was a member of Viola Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Sue Spurlock of Viola; two sons -- Christopher Spurlock and wife, Mekka of Elizabeth, and James Spurlock and wife, Samantha of Elizabeth; a sister, Melinda Sue Deatherage of Viola; five grandchildren -- Joshua Spurlock, Daniel Morrison, Brooke Holland, Michael Spurlock and Mallory Spurlock.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bill Thrasher, and three sisters -- Barbara Cotter, Fern Pundle and Betty Lou Spurlock.
The funeral was Sept. 19 at Viola Assembly of God Church with Allen Cartwright and Chester Passmore officiating. Interment was in Pickren Hall Cemetery at Viola with arrangements under the direction of Barker Funeral Home of Salem.
Pallbearers were Kevin Browning, Mark Gardner, Mike Fore, Ray Wineland, Charles Estes and Billy Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were Roger Garner, Marlin Hall, Doug Cotter, Larry Thrasher, J.R. Cotter, Darrell Cotter and Jeremy Cline.
Memorials preferred to Pickren Hall Cemetery Association.
