Thirty-two minutes of play was just not enough to decide a winner as the number eight-seeded Salem Lady Greyhounds took on the ninth-seeded Cave City Cavewomen in the first round of the Lyon College High School Tournament Dec. 6.

With the score locked at 49-all, Salem's Cassi Hickinbotham missed a putback at the fourth-period buzzer to send the game to an extra frame.

In overtime, it was all Salem as the Lady Hounds closed the extra frame on a 10-1 run to post a 61-55 victory over the Cavewomen.

The Cavewomen opened the game in their trademark full-court pressure defense which gave Salem problems early in the first period.

Down 7-2, the Lady Greyhounds regrouped and closed the frame by holding Cave City scoreless the last 4:03, ending the first on a 7-zip run to lead 15-9 after the first.

The Cavewomen went on a run of their own to open the second period as Sarah Fugett (18 points) opened with a trey that got Cave City going.

Salem answered with Heather Bales in the paint as the Lady Hounds stayed in front for the duration of the period. Bales led the Lady Greyhounds with a game high 21 points.

Fugett hit a jumper in the lane late in the second for Cave City, but Salem took a 21-18 lead to the half.

Salem's lead disappeared moments inside the third period as Fugett tied the game at 21-all with a 3-pointer.

This sent the Cavewomen on a 14-3 run that put Cave City up 32-24 midway into the third.

Tori Watkins (eight points) closed the period with a couple of hoops for Salem, but the Lady Greyhounds trailed by five, 36-31, after three.

Bales put the lead back in Salem's favor midway into the fourth at 39-38, and the lead would swing back-and-fourth for the rest of the period.

With Salem in front 48-47 with 20 ticks left on the clock, Cave City's Christine Curtis (eight points) sank a clutch 16-foot jumper that switched the lead to the Cavewomen's side at 49-48.

The Lady Hounds moved the ball downcourt and called time out with seven seconds remaining in regulation to set up one last scoring chance.

Salem ran a play for Bales and she was fouled with four seconds left. She stepped to the charity stripe and sank her first free throw to knot the game at 49-all. The second shot caromed off the rim and was grabbed by Hickinbotham. She tried to stick it in as the buzzer sounded, but the ball rolled off the rim, sending the contest to overtime.

After Salem opened the extra frame with a pair of hoops to lead 52-49, Cave City took the lead back at 53-52 with baskets from Fugett and Joanna Anderson (16 points).

The Lady Hounds clamped down from that point on, allowing the Cavewomen just one more point in overtime.

Stephanie Barker (seven points) then cranked out a 3-pointer that sent Salem on a 10-1 run that sealed their 61-55 win over the Cavewomen.

Katie Howell added six points for Cave City, while Bobbi Walling tallied five and Callie Slade two for the Cavewomen.

Ashley Smith tossed in 11 for Salem, Samantha Smith added eight, Hannah Bray five and Brittany Bales four for the Lady Greyhounds.

The overtime bug also bit the Greyhounds Dec. 6, as they fell in double overtime to the Sulphur Rock Wildcats 56-54 in the first round of the Lyon College tourney.

Chad Willett paced Salem with 19 points, while Justin Howell added a double-double of 10 points and 12 boards. Leon Harvey tossed in 13 for the Greyhounds.
