THAYER -- Larry Forschler's guest speaker at a recent Thayer-Mammoth Spring Rotary Club meeting was Jeff Beck, the division train master with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad. Beck discussed the railroad shipping routes, the 54 trains that come through Thayer each day and the employment the railroad brings to the area. He said BNSF employs 100,000 nationally and there are 180 people employed in this area. He said they expect an attrition rate of 35 to 40 percent due to retirement in the next few years and they will be hiring locally.
Beck said the railroad has an impressive safety record, 340 days injury free. He said the railroad handles its own retirement which provides good benefits so their employees don't deal with OSHS or SSI.
