Rains gets seven years

Wednesday, April 17, 2002

OREGON COUNTY -- The man accused of killing Oregon County Chief Deputy Nathan Murphy last year has been sentenced to seven years in state prison and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine.

Robert N. Rains, 24, of Ellenboro, N.C., appeared before Scott County Circuit Judge David Dolan April 11 in Scott County Circuit Court to be sentenced on charges of involuntary manslaughter. Rains had previously appeared before Judge Dolan on Feb. 14 for a hearing and it was at this hearing he pled guilty to the manslaughter charge. The court precedings were changed from Oregon County to Scott County on a change of venue.

Rains hit Deputy Murphy's patrol vehicle, causing his death, just after 8 a.m. Feb. 19, 2001, on a county road north of Alton after a high speed chase in Shannon County.
