We have had a lot of reaction about the sex offender articles and pictures. This week in our sister publication, The South Missourian News, we have printed the last of the sex offenders - for a while.
I've learned that these offenders change their addresses often. Each time they do our law enforcement in Fulton, Sharp and Izard County as well as Oregon County, Mo., have an open invitation to publize that information in Areawide Media's publications.
On my office wall is pictures and information on 71 registered sex offenders. Yes, that's how many are living in the four counties we serve. I have put them there to remind me how important it is to keep our communities informed.
I have learned a lot about these people who prey on children. A lot more than I wanted to know. But some things I found out were good: sex offenders are required to go to counseling every month, and twice a year they have to take, and pay for, lie detectors tests. And, the most important thing I learned was that our law enforcment community is dedicated to keeping our children safe from these predators.
The only way our children will be safe is for us to always be watchful. A sex offender will almost always re-offend if given an opportunity - let's not give them the opportunity.
Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to drop us a note, make a phone call, or tell us in person that they appreciate us taking the time to do this.
Now, maybe, we can focus on the good in our communities; the people who always extend a helping hand; who go that extra mile to make someone's life a little easier. I'm so glad that means the majority in our communities.
