Towns prepare for Christmas

CHRISTMAS TIME: Thayer city employees were kept busy last week getting ready for Christmas activities in the city.
Christmas activities around the area will kick off with the Alton Little Mister and Miss Merry Christmas contest.

The theme for this year's Christmas celebration at Alton will be "Songs for Christmas."

The crowning of Little Mister and Miss Merry Christmas will take place in the Alton School Gym at 10 a.m. Dec. 4. Contestants must be 4 years old by Nov. 19 and the age limit is 9 years old.

The parade will be held at 11 a.m. following the Little Mister and Miss contest.

Prizes will be awarded to the winning floats in the parade. Alton resident Maxine Tinsley will serve as grand marshal for the parade. Any church organization or group that would like to enter a float can call Tammy Curtis of the Alton Culture Club at 417-778-7327.

Thayer Chamber of Commerce will also hold its Christmas parade Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. The parade will line up at Thayer High School and go across Highway 63 through downtown Thayer.

Call 417-264-7324 to enter the parade. The theme for the parade is "Christmas in the Ozarks." Float prizes will be donated by the Bank of Thayer and will be $100 for first place, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place. Thayer Citizen of the Year Carlene Williams will serve as the parade grand marshal. The crowning of Mister and Miss Merry Christmas from the elementary and high school will take place following the parade at the grandstand in downtown Thayer.

The Chamber will again sponsor the home decorating contest. Anyone who lives in the Thayer city limits and would like to enter their home in the contest may do so by calling 264-7324. First place will receive $50, second place $30 and the third place will receive $20. The homes will be judged the evening of Dec. 14.

The senior citizens of Koshkonong will hold the Christmas parade at Koshkonong Dec. 11 starting at 10:30 a.m. The theme for this year's parade will be "A Beary Merry Christmas." Several categories will be included in this parade including a decorated bicycle contest, cutest bear contest, floats, horses, wagons, classic and antique cars. To enter the parade call 867-5355 or 867-8104. There will be cash prizes given in all categories. No ATVs or motorcycles will be allowed in this year's parade for safety. The grand marshal for the parade will be Koshkonong Mayor Rose Vandiver. All parade entries are asked to gather behind the school by 9:30 a.m.

After the parade the Koshkonong Christmas Baby Contest will be held. This is for infants up to 3 years of age. To enter call Kathy Reynolds at 264-3688.

The Koshkonong senior citizens will serve lunch at the center following the parade.

The Mammoth Spring Christmas parade will be Dec. 11 starting at 2 p.m. The lineup for the parade will be at the Mammoth Spring City Park at 1 p.m. There will be cash prizes for the best float. A trophy will be awarded for the best decorated motor bike and gift certificates from Circle S Tack for the best decorated horse and rider.
