AARP sets driver safety classes

An AARP 55 Driver Safety Program course will be offered at the Ozark Acres Clubhouse, July 22 and 23 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. To register call Dorothy Parvin at 966-4610 after July 21.An AARP 55 Driver Safety Program course will also be offered at the Cherokee Village City Hall July 31 and Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. To register call William Shaffer at 257-4589 after July 21.An AARP 55 Driver Safety Program course will also be offered at First Baptist Church in Cherokee Village, 14 Choctaw, Aug. 5 and 6 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. To register call William Shaffer at 257-4589 after July 21.AARP 55 Driver Safety Program is an eight-hour classroom course for licensed drivers age 50 and over. It is a comprehensive review of safety and defensive diving and how to compensate for age-related physical changes such as vision changes, loss of hearing and how medications affect driving. Certified instructors teach it over a two-session period of four hours each. No driving or written tests are given. By Arkansas law, students age 55 and over who complete the course are entitled to a discount on their automobile insurance for a period of three years.Pre-registration is required. The classes are limited to not less than 15 and not more than 30. Additional classes can be scheduled in the community as needed to satisfy requests. AARP membership is not required.A registration fee of $10 per student covers a portion of the cost of workbooks, graduation certificates, etc. The AARP Diver Safety Program instructors are unpaid volunteers who participate in the program as a community service.
