Cougars no match for Greyhounds

Thursday, October 24, 2002

The Rector Cougars fell to the Salem Greyhounds 47-7 at home Friday night.

The Cougars had the ball first but were forced to punt. On their first play of the night from scrimmage tailback Duane Slagley ran the ball to the Cougar 17 yard line. Salem then fumbled and Anthony Stanley tackled the Greyhound back who recovered the ball for a seven yard loss.

Pushed back to the 24 yard line Slagley went to work again. First running the ball to the 19 on second down and then on third down he darted down the right side 19 yards for the touchdown at 8:43. When Woody Harlow kicked the PAT the score was 7-0.

When the Cougars were forced to punt again Salem started from their own 37. On first down Slagley scampered down to the 44 yard line. From that point a host of Greyhound runners steadily moved the ball downfield. Rick Cowart scored the touchdown with a one yard run at 1:21. The PAT was again good and the score was 14-0.

With time running out in the period the Cougars advanced the kickoff to their 35 yard line. After an incomplete pass, Jeff Featherston ran the ball to the 40 yard line. Another run by Featherston on third and four gave the Cougars a first down at midfield. On first and ten from the 50 Featherston shocked the Greyhounds as he ran for a touchdown with only three seconds remaining on the clock. Jeff Lester's PAT was good and the score was 14-7 as the period ended.

Salem would come right back as Joey Burk scored on a 55 yard run at 10:41 of the second period. The PAT made the score 20-7.

Rector stopped Salem on their next possession as Brian Arnold and Anthony Stanley together dropped the Salem ball carrier on a third down play at the Cougar 49.

After Salem punted Rector started from their own 23. A pass from Cougar quarterback Brandon Blount to Lester moved the ball to the 39. A five yard run by Rodney Dees on first down moved the ball to the 44 yard line, but the Cougar drive stalled at the 46 yard line and they were forced to punt.

After receiving the punt Salem set up at their own 44 yard line. From that point Salem moved for another touchdown with Brian Grass scoring on a five yard run with 12 seconds on the clock. The PAT made it 28-7 as the first half ended.

In the third period Burk scored on a 20 yard run at 6:10. The PAT left the score 35-7.

On their next possession the Cougars fumbled and Salem recovered the ball on the Cougar 29 yard line. This set up another Greyhound touchdown as Salem quarterback Luke Barker scored on a 14 yard keeper at 4:11. The missed PAT left the score 41-7.

Salem would score one more touchdown in the fourth period as Cowart scored on a five yard run at 11:36. The PAT made it 47-7 and finished the scoring for the night.

The game's outcome left Salem with a 4-3 record (3-2 in conference) and Rector dropped to 1-6 (1-5 in conference).

Greyhound Coach Bob Grass said, "The conference race is a real dog fight at this point. Hughes and Marked Tree are on top, both undefeated in conference play. We are on the bubble. We can get third place if we win out. Our next game with Cross County will go far to decide the playoff berths."
